NBA fans push back against Klay Thompson's claims that he's still a good defender: "He keeps trying to tell us he's not washed"

Klay Thompson is on the move for the first time in his career, opting to join the Dallas Mavericks for the upcoming season. Many fans are questioning whether or not the five-time All-Star can still play at a high level after he reminded the world of his confidence on both sides of the ball.

"At this point in my career, [you] still can't leave me open, and I can guard. ... I just still know I can be a very, very good player in this league," Thompson said.

Fans were quick to harp on Thompson, who has been the subject of plenty of online discourse this offseason as he joined a new team and may not be the player he once was.

"He keep tryna tell us he not washed," one user wrote.

"He’s trying too hard to convince us he’s not washed in interviews. Go back to being goofy klay and show us u still have it when you get on the court," added another.

Several fans said outright that he most definitely cannot still play defense.

"I have about 70+ games of evidence last year that say otherwise," said one user.

"Bro just hang it up," a fan said.

One fan commented that it's likely he can still play some defense, just not as well as he could in his prime.

"He can guard guys who are not real threat on offense (like 3rd/4th option), but if he's guarding the No.1/No.2 options, they are gonna feast on Klay. It is what it is," one fan said.

Another remarked that he may not be washed, but that doesn't mean pairing him with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic in Dallas is smart.

"Not all the way washed yet but starting him at SF next to Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić is possibly the craziest thing you can do," a fan wrote.

Klay Thompson appears to struggle in edited post of pick-up game

A video of Klay Thompson allegedly playing recently in a pick-up basketball setting went viral online, with most clips in the compilation showing the former champion struggling to knock down shots and stay in front of his man on defense.

Amateur basketball player Oliver Xu shared some of the game on his social media accounts. Xu was twice seen blowing by Thompson for a dunk and several times played tight defense on Thompson, forcing a miss.
