In 2017, the Boston Celtics and LA Lakers were slated to pick first and second overall in the NBA draft. It was the perfect moment to reignite their lifelong rivalry for years to come, taking the foundational pieces of their teams for the future.
The Celtics traded down to No. 3, leaving the Lakers with the opportunity to draft Duke star Jayson Tatum. However, Magic Johnson didn't think the team needed another forward at the time, as he told SiriusXM NBA Radio.
"His agent also didn't want us to work him out because he didn't want him to end up with the Lakers because we were already top-heavy with forwards," Johnson said on Dec. 16.
Tatum's agent, Jeff Wechsler, didn't remember things that way.

Tatum spent the offseason working out just five miles away from the Lakers' practice facility and they didn't scout him. Instead, the Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns were the only teams in attendance.
"I was like, 'Well, it's not factually correct,'" Wechsler said on Thursday, via ESPN. "Parts of it were correct, but it wasn't the sequence or the cadence of what happened. I talked to Magic, and Magic basically said what he said (on the radio), that we're deep at forward, we're going to take a point guard."
The Lakers coveted hometown star Lonzo Ball, who was a star at UCLA and looked like the final piece for their young core.
Tatum grew up idolizing Kobe Bryant and dreamt of playing for the Lakers, but he never seemed part of their plans.
Jayson Tatum reveals his least favorite team to play against
Given his past as an LA Lakers fan, Tatum has no ill will towards the Purple & Gold. He even starred in an NBA commercial donning Kobe Bryant's threads.
When asked what his least favorite team to face is, he admitted that going up north to play in Canada can be a bit of a burden.
"That's like a trick question," Tatum said on Tuesday, via 'Jimmy Kimmel Live.' "Maybe the Raptors. Not a least favorite team, but you have to go through customs. It's just a hassle."
The Celtics and Raptors have already faced each other thrice this season and their fourth meeting will be on Feb. 25 in Toronto. With Boston second and the Raptors 14th in the Eastern Conference, Tatum won't likely have to go up against them in a seven-game series this year.
