Philadelphia 76ers tampering incident: Why was the NBA team stripped of 2nd-round picks for 2023 and 2024?

Over the summer, the Philadelphia 76ers were investigated by the NBA for tampering. The league later found them guilty and stripped them of multiple second-round picks.

During the offseason, Daryl Morey executed multiple moves to put the Philadelphia 76ers in a better position to compete for a title. Thanks to a massive pay cut from James Harden, the team was able to bring in players like P.J. Tucker and Danuel House Jr.

This was a reunion of sorts as all three players were teammates in Houston, where Morey was GM before coming to Philly. Because of this, many around the league suspected the 76ers of tampering.

In the end, the NBA came to the decision that the Sixers were involved in tampering. They concluded that P.J. Tucker and Danuel House Jr. began talking with the team about deals before they were supposed to.

Philadelphia 76ers losing 2 second-round picks could come to haunt them

In hindsight, losing two second-round picks isn't much of a punishment. That being said, it could end up hurting the Philadelphia 76ers as they continue their quest for a title.

Like other contenders, the 76ers are trying to make final upgrades before the NBA trade deadline. While they aren't trying to make any big splashes, moves could still be made around the star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden.

Looking at all the moves that have been made on deadline day, second-round picks have proven to be valuable. After losing two to a tampering investigation, Daryl Morey has fewer assets at his disposal when negotiating deals.

Overall, the Sixers can't be too mad about how things unfolded. P.J. Tucker is a valuable veteran with championship experience. What he brings to the table is far more valuable than a pair of second-round picks.

Even with fewer picks at his disposal, Morey is sure to find a way to get some form of deal done. Throughout his time as a GM, he's been known to make trades happen.

One key area of need is a backup center. It is a key void in their rotation right now. With other favorites like the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks getting better, they cannot afford to sit by the wayside and do nothing. Time will tell how important the absence of those picks will ultimately be.
