Fans reacted as the San Antonio Spurs welcomed veteran Chris Paul to their team on Sunday. Paul is the Spurs’ biggest acquisition this season, pairing him up with young wunderkind Victor Wembanyama in what could be one of the most lethal pick-and-roll duos in the NBA next season.
The Spurs announced the deal on social media, posting a graphic of Paul that had a blurred “Welcome” text.
“Officially a Spur 😤 Welcome to the 210, Chris Paul!,” the Spurs’ social media team captioned.

The post also included Paul with his Golden State Warriors jersey. Paul was waived by the Warriors in the offseason after playing just one season with them.
The graphic gained traction on X for the wrong reasons, though. Fans reacted to the post, slamming the Spurs’ social media team for their lackluster welcome visual for Paul, who's regarded as one of the best point guards in the league.
“Photoshop not in the budget?,” said one fan.
“The graphic designer is Tim Duncan 😂,” said another fan.
“What is this graphic 😭😭,” said one more fan.
Other fans pointed out the lack of effort from those who edited the graphic because Paul still donned the Warriors’ jersey in the post.
“Couldn’t jersey swap him? 😭😭,” said one fan.
“What in the Canva Free Trial am I looking at?,” said another fan.
“So not even a AI San Antonio Spurs uniform…,” said another fan.
The Spurs are Paul’s seventh team in his 19-year NBA career. A veteran addition to the youthful Spurs, Paul will be playing under legendary coach Gregg Popovich for the first time in the NBA, after playing against him in numerous playoff series.
Chris Paul signs one-year deal with the Spurs
After getting his release from the Golden State Warriors, Chris Paul signed a one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs worth more than $11 million for next season, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Warriors waived Chris Paul a day before his $30 million contract for the 2024-2025 season was set to be guaranteed on June 30. The Spurs didn't take long to snag him in the unrestricted free agency market, signing him in principle before closing the deal on Sunday.
Paul will be spending his 20th season with the Spurs and is expected to boost them next season after winning just 22 games last season.
He's projected to be the Spurs’ starting point guard next season, filling their most glaring weakness last season. The Spurs experimented in the point guard position last year as they staggered the guard minutes for forward Jeremy Sochan and Tre Jones.
The veteran Paul, a 12-time All-Star, averaged 9.2 points and 6.8 assists for the Warriors last season, playing 58 games.
