After missing four games due to a right ankle sprain, Rob Dillingham returned to action on Friday night against the LA Lakers. The rookie, who had seen inconsistent playing time before his injury, had the chance to display his post-recovery form against a Western Conference rival.

Dillingham entered late in the first quarter but was subbed out at the start of the second. He returned with two minutes left in the third quarter, assisting Naz Reid on a 3-pointer and hitting a trey of his own to extend the Timberwolves’ lead to 77-66 heading into the fourth.

Early in the final quarter, Dillingham drained another 3-pointer but missed two subsequent attempts before being taken out of the game.

The Timberwolves pulled off a 97-87 victory in the low-scoring matchup, with Anthony Edwards leading the charge with 23 points and Julius Randle contributing 21. Three other Timberwolves also reached double figures.

Timberwolves coach wants Rob Dillingham to be more impactful on defense

Known for his offensive prowess, Rob Dillingham was acquired by the Timberwolves in a trade during the 2024 NBA draft. However, coach Chris Finch has emphasized the need for the rookie to develop his defensive skills.

“I think he’s found a small package within our offense that he really can thrive in,” Finch said via Twin Cities. “I think it’s pairing that down for him, and him being comfortable is important because he can focus on those things.”

Standing at 6-foot-1, Dillingham faces challenges as an undersized guard but must find ways to make a defensive impact, Finch explained.

“He’s got to get better as the low man in the back, down at the bottom of the floor," Finch said. "I know it’s going to be tough for him down there, but he’s got to find a way to impact. Whether it’s come early, get steals, take a charge, be vertical, all those things are on the table for him.”

Tonight marked the first time in his 12-game career that Dillingham notched a steal.
