Russell Westbrook insinuates he can make players better around him on any unit: “I know my abilities to make guys better around me”

LA Lakers guard Russell Westbrook in action

Russell Westbrook has been thriving in his bench role. The LA Lakers guard recorded his fourth consecutive double-double during the team's 123-92 blowout win over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday. Westbrook opposed the idea that it was only the second unit he impacted with his playmaking. Here's what he said after the game (via House of Highlights):

"Honestly don't matter what unit it is. I know my abilities to make guys better around me. It's what I've done in this league for a long time."

Westbrook's double-doubles have come in points and assists. The Lakers' role players and even their starting unit have benefitted from the punch the former MVP has provided as the team's sixth man.

Westbrook has helped the Lakers maintain their pace and improve it when needed. He has been instrumental in the Purple and Gold's three-game winning stretch. Westbrook has averaged 11.3 points and 11.3 assists across those three games.

The LA Lakers needed him to be at his best as a playmaker, with LeBron James sidelined due to an injury during that period. Russell Westbrook has struck a solid partnership with co-star Anthony Davis as well, who the Lakers want to be more involved offensively.

Russell Westbrook's consistency crucial for LA Lakers

Russell Westbrook came into this season with a question mark about his future with the LA Lakers. His critics believe he could have been out of the league if the Lakers traded him. Russ didn't get a good start this year with the starting unit.

He averaged 10.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game, shooting 28.9% from the field and 8.3% from 3-point range in his three games as a starter. Since coming off the bench, Westbrook has bagged 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game, shooting 43.6% from the field and 39.6% from 3-point range.

Westbrook has looked comfortable in his new role. He's been able to work his magic with the ball in his hands, and that's been immense for the Lakers to play better, especially on the offensive end.

His consistency has been crucial during the Lakers' three-game winning streak and will continue to be important moving forward. The Lakers have a tough schedule ahead, with majority of their games on the road.

LA will be hoping Westbrook can continue his fine run and help the Lakers secure positive results.
