The San Antonio Spurs continued building around Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama in the 2024 NBA Draft. After finishing with a bottom-five record last season, this draft marked their first with Wembanyama as a franchise cornerstone.

Entering Wednesday’s draft, the Spurs had two first-round picks: No. 4 and No. 8. However, they ended up using only the fourth pick, trading away the eighth.

With the fourth pick, the Spurs selected combo guard Stephon Castle from UConn, who declared for the draft after just one year.

At 6-foot-5 with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, Castle is a two-way prospect with both offensive potential and defensive skills. He is a quality playmaker with the size and strength to secure his positions on the court, excelling in making both kick-out and interior passes.

Castle’s playmaking abilities address one of the Spurs' biggest weaknesses from last season, potentially helping Wembanyama develop better.

Despite his strengths, Castle was a subpar shooter, making only 26.7% of his shots from deep. However, his defensive prowess stands out despite his youth.

For their eighth pick, the Spurs drafted Kentucky’s Rob Dillingham but traded him to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In exchange, the Spurs received an unprotected 2031 first-round pick and a top 1 protected 2030 pick swap.

The Timberwolves gained a dynamic scorer in Dillingham, a 6-foot-1 guard who averaged 15.2 points on 44.4% shooting from 3-point range during his lone season at Kentucky.

Meanwhile, San Antonio added to its growing stash of draft picks while continuing to build around Wembanyama.

Prior to the trade with the Timberwolves, the Spurs had three first-round picks in 2025, one first-round pick and a swap option with Atlanta in 2026, two first-round picks in 2027, two first-round picks in 2028, one first-round pick in 2029, two first-round picks in 2030 and their own 2031 first-round pick.

Spurs have two picks in the second round

The San Antonio Spurs are not done yet. They still have two picks in the second round of the draft, which is set to take place tomorrow.

They are slated to select with the 35th and 48th picks.

The Spurs have a lot of options in the second round. Duke’s Kyle Filipowski, Kansas’ Johnny Furphy, Marquette’s Tyler Kolek, Sweden’s Bobi Klintman and Minnesota’s Cameron Christie are all still on the board.

The Spurs could also consider selecting UCLA’s Adem Bona, G League Ignite’s Tyler Smith, Spain’s Juan Nuñez, Kentucky’s Justin Edwards or even take a swing at USC’s Bronny James.
