An unusual instance occurred Friday during the LA Lakers-Minnesota Timberwolves preseason game as the NBA TV ran a Sydney Sweeney commercial mid-game. The incident happened in the first quarter mid-possession.
Sydney appeared on viewers' screens in a Dr. Squatch's Body Wash commercial, where she is portrayed as a genie. Here's the commercial that interrupted the live TV action (h/t The Daily Dunk on X):
Fans were stunned to see a commercial like this, especially with Sweeney in it, as it interrupted an ongoing game, which is an unlikely instance. One of the users on X comically reacted, saying they had seen more of Sweeney than Lakers rookie Bronny James, who was yet to take to the court.

"Seen Sydney Sweeney more than Bronny so far," this X user wrote.
"This may be the only time I’ve ever wanted Sydney Sweeney to NOT be on my screen," added another.

Sydney Sweeney's commercial momentarily takes eyes off Lakers' struggles
The Lakers couldn't have been more thankful for a distraction with the Sydney Sweeney commercial. They had a horrid start to the game, trailing by as many as 20 points towards the end of the first quarter. LA couldn't get shots to fall after it opted to settle for jumpers early, looking to implement coach JJ Redick's 3-point-heavy offense.
The Lakers shot 10-of-24, including 1-of-7 from 3-point range in the first quarter. The Timberwolves, meanwhile, went 13-of-20, making 6-of-9 3-pointers.
Nevertheless, the Lakers were without LeBron James and Anthony Davis, so some of these growing pains in a preseason opener were expected. Most players, including D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves, were in action for the first time since the Lakers' season ended in April.
One of the other positive takeaways for the Lakers was the execution of the plays that Redick had designed for the team. They didn't always end up with a basket out of those possessions, but the structure and attention to detail were visible.
The Lakers eventually trimmed that 20-point deficit to nine points, entering the halftime break as Reaves, Russell, Rui Hachimura, and Jaxson Hayes found their rhythm offensively in the second quarter.
