Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry shared what he envisions for his Curry Brand. Back in 2013, Curry decided to sign with Under Armour to become their cover athlete for their basketball shoe line.
Before signing with them, basketball apparel company giant Nike offered a similar deal with Steph. However, the Warriors star turned it down to join Under Armour instead.
During an interview with Emily Chang, Curry explained why he took the risk of joining a brand that wasn't known for selling basketball merchandise. Steph understood that because there were little to no basketball athletes signed with Under Armour, he felt like there was more room to grow.
"There's a reason I'm not [with Nike]," Curry said. "I've always been an underdog. It's kind of my mentality. When I joined Under Armour back in 2013, the basketball roster was pretty slim and basically starting the category from scratch. So to be the signature athlete for the seven to eight years that I was there, to then turning into a Curry Brand, and the success that we've had, I'm super proud of that to be honest."

Steph Curry's brand, through the help of Under Armour, is similar to how Michael Jordan started with Nike and eventually came up with the Air Jordan. Curry's goal is to reach the heights Jordan did with his brand and be a worthy competitor of his.
"My version of [Air Jordan], in the sense of he set the standard and then everybody's in the comparison game of his career, on the court, and obviously what Air Jordan means culturally, on the court as well," Curry said. "But what [Curry Brand] learned over the last four years, doing what we do great and understand this is a marathon."
How did Steph Curry's brand start out?
In 2013, Steph Curry became one of the signature athletes to represent Under Armour in their collection of basketball apparel. The Golden State Warriors star got his signature shoe line, similar to other NBA stars with other brands like Nike and Adidas. However, Curry decided to play the long game with a brand that didn't have all the big stars.
Steph's business decisions ultimately led to the Curry Brand launching in 2020. Similar to Michael Jordan's setup with Nike when they came up with the Air Jordan, the Warriors star teamed up with Under Armour to come up with the Curry Brand. Steph's brand features a plethora of basketball apparel, accessories, and shoes.
Steph Curry is the president of his brand and came to terms with Under Armour that the brand will still exist even beyond his playing days in the NBA.
