Steve Kerr on Steph Curry after Warriors' embarrassing defeat to Knicks

Without Steph Curry, the defending champs Golden State Warriors lost 132-94 to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The Bay Area team is just 1-5 without the NBA’s all-time three-point king on their roster.

After the game, Steve Kerr succinctly described the Warriors’ situation without the two-time MVP (via C.J. Holmes):

"We sank tonight. We're trying to hang in there and we will. We have another game tomorrow."

Warriors struggling without Steph Curry

After tonight’s loss to the Knicks, the Warriors’ record fell to 15-17, which is good for only 11th place in the Western Conference. Things don’t get any easier for Kerr’s team as they finish a brutal six-game road stretch against the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow night.

The Golden State Warriors have announced that Curry will miss at least a few weeks due to a shoulder injury, with the player himself giving an update on the injury. He suffered the injury against the Indiana Pacers last December 15 and does not have a definite timetable for his return.

After Steph Curry injured his shoulder against the Indiana Pacers, Steve Kerr told the media that the Warriors feel that they can still beat anybody. He added that they will have to compete and show fight as they navigate at least a month without one of the NBA’s best players.

They didn’t have that grit versus the New York Knicks tonight. The home team went to the free-throw line 32 times, hitting 25 of them. Golden State, on the other hand, gathered just 13 freebies, making 12 of their attempts.

The disparity in rebounding was yet another sign that Golden State packed it in tonight. The Knicks voraciously cleaned the glass, grabbing 47 rebounds to the Warriors’ 29. 14 of New York’s rebounds were on the offensive glass, giving them more possessions and opportunities to score.

The New York Knicks led from start to finish. Although the Warriors managed to cut the deficit to two points in the second quarter, there was just no stopping the Knicks’ train. The Knicks manhandled the Warriors in practically all aspects of the game.

Steve Kerr knew his team would face rough sailing without Steph Curry, but he also expected a lot more competitive fire from the reigning champs.

Kerr is still hoping that the development of James Wiseman, Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga will catch up to the Warriors’ core. They haven’t shown that consistently as a group this season and in tonight’s encounter with the Knicks. The head coach, though, is positive things will turn around for the team’s young role players:

“These young guys are working their b***s of everyday in practice. We all want them to have success so it’s tough to see when things don’t go well. At the same time, we gotta keep our energy and spirit up.”

The trio combined for 28 points, but Golden State was outscored by 29 when Wiseman played, 23 with Kuminga and 17 with Moody. Without Steph Curry, they will have to significantly step up to keep their season afloat.
