Patrick Beverley concluded that music was a big part of Ja Morant’s recent gun-toting controversy that caused a social media uproar. Morant was suspended by the NBA for eight games for posting a video of himself carrying a gun while partying at a nightclub.

Legendary boxer Claressa Shields couldn’t disagree more with Beverley’s assessment. Here’s what she had to say about Beverley’s comments:

“Are y’all serious!? Yes music is influential but we all have a choice! Do you see me Twerking, and being naked! I’m an athlete! Olympic athlete, world champ! We all have choices! Stop making excuses and tell him make the right choice! Be a leader!”

Ja Morant has been involved in three gun incidents over the last few months. The latest, which happened in Colorado, was the only one where he was suspended by the NBA.

Morant promptly issued a public apology after clips of the said video went viral. He vowed to seek help and brought himself to Florida for counseling.

Yesterday, the Memphis Grizzlies superstar agreed to an interview with ESPN and opened up on the incident with former player Jalen Rose.

Morant’s statement never included the influence of music on his recent actions:

"The gun wasn’t mine. It’s not who I am, I don’t condone any type of violence, but I take full responsibility for my actions. I made a bad mistake and I can see now the image that I painted over myself with my recent mistakes."

He added:

"In the future, Imma show everybody who Ja really is and what I’m about and change this narrative."

Claressa Shields may agree with how Ja Morant accepted responsibility for his actions and his assertion to show that he’s not that kind of person.

The Memphis Grizzlies are taking a hardline stance when Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies are on the road

The Memphis Grizzlies own a 13-22 record outside of the FedEx Forum. They are one of the worst teams in the NBA when they’re playing away from their home crowd.

Reportedly, they have not been as disciplined when they travel. Steven Adams was rumored to have held a players-only meeting to address the issue. Ja Morant was reportedly the main target of that get-together.

The Grizzlies have decided to help the players regarding this matter by doing something drastic. Joe Vardon and Sam Amick of “The Athletic” reported this:

“Memphis, despite owning the third-best record in the West, is a dismal 13-22 on the road, which numerous team insiders have blamed on a lack of maturity and focus emanating from [Ja] Morant — who otherwise is averaging 27.1 points and a career-best 8.2 assists in an All-Star season,”
“There have even been travel measures taken to curtail nightlife habits this season, with the Grizzlies leaving more road cities (especially the glitzier ones, like Miami) immediately after the game instead of staying overnight. Additional accountability measures may follow.”

It will be interesting to see how Ja Morant’s return and the team’s new road policies play out.
