The NBA reportedly is considering changing the All-Star Game format: All you need to know

2023 NBA All Star Game
NBA reportedly is considering changing the All-Star Game

The NBA All-Star Game is one of the biggest spectacles of the year, and it might be getting some changes. Recent reports have emerged that the big game might go back to its traditional format.

In order to spice up the NBA All-Star Game, the league has made some tweaks to get fans engaged. The biggest being how the squads are selected. For the past few years, the two top vote getters have been team captains, and from there they've drafted their team. This was typically done on its own night, but this year they did the draft right before the game to give it a pick-up basketball vibe.

After years of this format, change might be in the air again. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the game could go back to being Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference as early as next year.

Should the NBA All-Star Game go back to its old format?

A case can be made for either side in regards to the NBA All-Star game. Each format has aspects to it that make the evening more exciting from a fan perspective.

As for the current layout, it gives fans more an impact on how things play out. Most notably, who gets to be captain and start in the game. After that, there is so much room for parity that could lead to more people tuning in.

Since the NBA switched to the draft format, it's created some fun moments for TV and social media. LeBron James and Kevin Durant have done phenomenal in this role in previous years, adding some theatrics to the event.

However, there is something about the original format that might entice fans and players. Keeping the squads separated by conference leads to fun matchups that fans are eager to see. If they had stuck with this, we would have seen Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic battle it out on the court while they also fought to see who would be MVP for the past three seasons.

At the end of the day, it's hard for the league to mess something like this up. No matter how the squads are divided up, it's still all of the NBA's best players on the court at one time. This will always lead to a thrilling matchup that will keep fans coming back for years to come.
