Adam Silver reveals the reason behind Jontay Porter's lifetime suspension
Jontay Porter had been under investigation by the league since March after some unusual betting activity was noted. As reported by DraftKings, the highest bets on two occasions were put on a poor performance by Jontay Porter, when he was playing with the Toronto Raptors. On both occasions, Porter exited the game with different ailments, and the bettors profited.
Before he joined the Raptors, Porter played for three different G League teams. Even when Porter was in the G League, he bet on NBA games, according to FanDuel.
In his statement regarding the lifetime ban on Porter, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said:
“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport. Which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment."
Jontay Porter is the younger brother of Michael Porter Jr., who plays for the Denver Nuggets. The younger Porter has had tough luck in his basketball career. Jontay and MPJ, both played at Missouri. However, while MPJ was drafted in the first round in 2018, Jontay went undrafted.
The same year, Jontay Porter tore his ACL for the second consecutive year. After he put his name in the 2019 draft, he went undrafted. His luck finally turned around when he was called by the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2020-21 season. MPJ, on the other hand, is an NBA champion and has signed a five-year, $179 million deal with the Nuggets.
