Team USA has long been regarded as the gold standard of basketball on the international stage. The team has featured some of the best players in the world and the best coaching staff the United States can offer.

Shortly after their first scrimmage against Team USA Select, the Olympic-bound Team USA posed for a picture with the Select squad, which showcased the roster’s depth and star power for the biggest sporting contest in the world next month.

The scrimmage reportedly saw Team USA escape with a 74-73 win. The Select squad consisted of top high school prospect Cooper Flagg, Langston Galloway, Brandin Podziemski, Keegan Murray, Brandon Miller, Jaime Jaquez, Payton Pritchard, and others.

With Team USA now reinforced by multiple former NBA MVPs Steph Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Joel Embiid, fans raved about the gold-medal chances of the team.

“This team wipes the ‘dream team’ btw,” said one fan.
“Anything less than a gold Medal will be disgraceful,” said another fan.
“This looks unreal surely they would get Gold I don't think any team has chance to beat this team,” said one fan.

Other fans, however, chose a more pessimistic point of view, dismissing the squad’s star power and questioning the team’s capabilities.

“The All Overrated team,” said one fan.
“How did this team almost lose to Cooper Flagg and Payton Pritchard 💀,” said another fan.
“Gold or bust. 2nd is not an option,” said one fan.

Aside from James, Curry, Embiid, and Durant, Team USA is brimming with NBA superstars such as Kawhi Leonard, Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, Tyrese Haliburton, and Anthony Davis.

Team USA is coached by Golden State Warriors’ Steve Kerr, and his assistants Tyronn Lue of the Los Angeles Clippers, Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, and Mark Few of Gonzaga University.

Team USA to have LeBron James as point forward, while Steph Curry will play off ball

Team USA will be utilizing LeBron James as a point forward, which is a hybrid of the point guard position and a forward. Meanwhile, Steph Curry will be transitioning to an off-ball role, according to a report by The Athletic.

James has been playing as the point forward for the Lakers since 2019, maximizing his playmaking prowess as a six-foot-nine forward. With James filling the guard role, Curry will be used as a movement shooter to augment his catch-and-shoot skillset for Team USA, especially as the Olympic court will have a shorter 3-point line than the NBA.

With this setup, James and Curry, who have both won four NBA titles, will be playing off each other’s strengths against other international teams.

The Olympic men’s basketball tournament will start on July 27 in Paris, France with the gold medal game slated for August 11.

Team USA will play Nikola Jokic’s Serbia, Jose Alvarado’s Puerto Rico, and South Sudan in the group phase of the tournament.
