The Atlanta Hawks have become the latest team charged by the NBA with breaching player participation rules. The Hawks were slapped with a $100,000 fine for holding Trae Young out against the Boston Celtics.

The Hawks had listed Trae Young as out with right Achilles tendinitis, but he was healthy enough to play. Despite his absence, the Hawks pulled off a stunning 117-116 upset over the Celtics.

“Following an investigation, including review by an independent physician, the NBA determined that the Hawks held Young out of a game that he could have played in under the medical standard in the (Player Participation) Policy,” the statement from the league read.

The NBA has been strict about teams resting healthy players since its introduction in 2023. In October, the league fined the Philadelphia 76ers $100,000 for resting Joel Embiid in their season opener.

Despite how poorly the Hawks have played last season against the Cavs, Trae Young has been a bright spark when the two team clash. In 18 games against Cleveland, he has averaged 25.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 9.2 assists, winning eight times.

The Cavs won 3-1 last season. Again, the only game the Hawks won, Young was sidelined due to injury.
