Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever had a rematch with the Atlanta Dream last week. An incident during the game sparked a heated debate on social media.
After being sent to the bench due to foul trouble, Brittney Griner was seen making a couple of remarks. Political activist Riley Gaines attempted to interpret what Griner said. According to Gaines, Griner made hateful comments toward Clark.
However, former ESPN analyst Jemele Hill did not see it that way. She called out Gaines for "spreading misinformation" and claimed that Griner was complaining about the officials, not Caitlin Clark.
"I get that your whole personality is caught up in stuff like this, so you don’t care about spreading misinformation. 1) the foul call made on her had nothing to do with Caitlin Clark. It was because she fouled Natasha Howard. 2) She clearly says 'trash' and 'f***ing WACK CALL,'" Hill tweeted.
Gaines responded to Hill's tweet but changed the topic. She proceeded to ask the longtime sports analyst to comment on trans athletes in women's sports.
Gaines has spoken out against Griner on numerous occasions since she returned to the United States following her arrest in Russia.
Brittney Griner was visibly upset with the foul on the play involving Caitlin Clark
While a shooting foul on Natasha Howard caused Brittney Griner to foul out, Caitlin Clark was involved in an earlier play. During a dribble hand-off, Griner operated as the screener. Following the pass, she turned to set a screen on Clark. As the Fever guard worked her way around Griner, the Dream star was called for an offensive foul.
Griner appeared to extend her arm, catching Clark in the face with an elbow. This ended up being Griner's fifth foul.
The Dream managed to take the first meeting between these teams 91-90, but the rematch was a different story. Thanks to a strong showing from Howard, Indiana came away victorious 81-76 and evened the season series.
