Victor Wembanyama reacts as French compatriots go 1, 2 in 2024 NBA draft

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama reacts as his fellow Frenchmen made history in the 2024 NBA draft. For the first time in league history, the top two picks are international talents and from the same country. Zaccharie Risacher was picked by the Atlanta Hawks with the first pick while Alex Sarr was selected second by the Washington Wizards.

It's rare to see international talent get selected early in the draft, but this year's group of talented players is different. Wemby couldn't help but share the special moment with his fellow countrymen on social media.

"It’s France brother," the translated caption on Wemby's post said.

To make it more interesting, this year's top 10 picks featured three players from the European country. Tidjane Salaun was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the sixth pick.

Last year, two French talents were picked in the lottery. After Wemby went No. 1, the Washington Wizards' Bilal Coulibaly was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the seventh pick.

UConn star to play alongside Victor Wembanyama

The Spurs used the fourth pick to draft Stephon Castle. The 6-foot-6 guard is expected to form a dynamic duo with Victor Wembanyama. With his height, Castle is capable of playing both guard positions.

Castle played one season at UConn where he became a national champion under the leadership of Dan Hurley. He averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He's a decent shot creator as he shot 47.2%. However, his outside shooting isn't impressive as he only made 26.7% from beyond the arc.

Despite not being an excellent shooter, there's hope that he'll get to develop his shooting skills with the Spurs. Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman shared his breakdown of what Castle can do on the basketball floor.

"Castle's ability to handle and facilitate at 6'6" and 215 pounds separates him as one of the most efficient pick-and-roll operators in this year's draft class," Wasserman wrote. "He excelled in ball screens without a reliable pull-up, mostly due to his live-dribble passing and ability to use pacing and physicality while taking it to the rim."

Many trust him in his skills to facilitate the offense with his ability to run the pick-and-roll.
