Cam Whitmore's return is something that Villanova fans cannot stop thinking about after his thumb injury in the preseason kept him from playing. The highest-ranked recruit from the Wildcats' last recruiting class is also projected to be a lottery pick. This is the first of many injuries that first-year head coach Kyle Neptune has had to deal with early on in the season
He was asked Thursday about Cam Whitmore's progress and could not give a definitive answer on if Cam Whitmore would return against the Sooners tomorrow when asked by reporter. " Definitely (a chance Whitmore plays.) There's been a chance for the last week, too." - Jeff Neiburg via Twitter
Cam Whitmore's return will be stellar for a Villanova team that has struggled in their last four games, totaling their record to 2-5. The Wildcats need an athletic wing like Whitmore to drive and penetrate. His projections in the draft are very high, due to his athletic finishing ability around the rim. In the Basketball U18 team FIBA U18 games, he impressed scouts with his impact on both sides of the floor.
He averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds, shooting 46% from three and 70% from the field, en route to winning a gold medal with team USA.
Wildcats' struggles
Villanova has not had a familiar situation during their off-season. Their lead guard Justin Moore has been recovering from a torn Achilles he suffered against Houston in the Elite Eight last season. He is targeting some time around the Big East season, he can help turn this team right around with a co-partner in Whitmore.
Cam Whitmore's return is needed more than ever after the Phil Knight Invitational where Villanova went winless. They lost a heartbreaker to an Iowa State team that came to play the entire weekend by two points. Calen Daniels tried his best to overcome the hometown team Portland out of the West Coast conference; however, they could not prevail. They lost by 12 and followed that up with a loss to Oregon by seven.
They will face a 6-1 Oklahoma team that is on a four-game winning streak and who are confident about getting the job done on the road. The Wildcats have enough talent to pull out a win against a well-coached Sooners team that will be ready to play. Cam Whitmore's return is a lot closer than it is further, so Wildcats fans should take that with a grain of salt and hope that they can get out of this four-game slide they have been in tomorrow at home.
