Russell Westbrook and the Denver Nuggets blew out the LA Lakers 127-102 during Saturday's road matchup. A few days later, leaked audio surfaced of the veteran point guard seemingly trash-talking his former teammate, Lakers superstar center Anthony Davis. The clip brought about mixed NBA fan reactions, with some accusing Westbrook of hypocrisy.
Westbrook was regularly criticized during his one-and-a-half-season stint with LA from 2021 to 2023. Many felt his subpar 3-point shooting and need to have the ball to be effective made him clash with Davis and superstar forward LeBron James.
Since being dealt by the Lakers, Westbrook has continued bouncing around the league. He spent a season and a half with the LA Clippers before joining Denver over the offseason, marking his sixth team since 2019.
While Westbrook has again struggled with his shooting efficiency this season (39.4%), he has provided the Nuggets with consistent energy off the bench. Such was the case on Saturday at Crypto.com Arena, as he nearly recorded a triple-double with 14 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists.

On Monday, footage of Westbrook taking an apparent jab at Davis during the contest went viral on X/Twitter. In the clip, the 2017 MVP seemingly calls Davis a "soft a** n**ga" after getting whistled for an early second-quarter foul.
Later in the video, Westbrook appears to call out Lakers fans after drilling a fourth-quarter 3-pointer.
"Boom, b*tch. What the f**k are they gonna say now? Go home!" Westbrook purportedly says in the footage.
Fans turned in mixed reactions, with some asserting that Russell Westbrook can dish out trash talk but can't take it.
"He's the same guy that was crying when fans were calling him 'Westbrick,' and he will never win (a) chip. (Most) overrated player in the NBA!" @nikkiphoenix23 said.
"Same dude that has fans kicked out for chirping at him? Russ (is) just as soft," @maxnewbury wrote.
Meanwhile, others mocked the nine-time All-Star for struggling to find a long-term NBA home.
"Westbrick (is) on his sixth team looking for a ring, and he thinks he has any business talking?" @g12_lj said.
"Buddy, this (is) your 20th team since you left the Lakers," @bronisabeast wrote.
However, a few fans defended Westbrook, noting that he shouldn't have been blamed for LA's shortcomings during his brief tenure with the franchise.
"Westbrook (is) proving (to) everyone that he was not the problem in LA," @dgsire said.
"They said Russ was the problem in LA, yet the Lakers still got problems, and he's gone," @DTRJUICE wrote.
Anthony Davis commended Russell Westbrook's "energy" following heated interaction
While Russell Westbrook seemingly went at Anthony Davis on Saturday, the 2020 NBA champion still praised his former teammate postgame.
Davis lauded Westbrook's "energy," noting that he may have had extra motivation against his ex-squad.
"He brings that energy," Davis said (Timestamp: 19:22). "You know how Russ plays, he plays hard. He made some shots (and) some steals. He played how Russ plays.
"I'm pretty sure them guys know the history with us and probably amped him up a little bit more. When he comes in the game, he's very disruptive and brings that juice for them."
So, it appears Davis still respects Westbrook, regardless of the Nuggets veteran's feelings about LA.
