Antoine Davis was 26 points shy of breaking legendary Pete Maravich’s all-time NCAA Division 1 scoring record of 3,667 points. He finished with 22 points tonight, to bring his total to 3,664. The Detroit Mercy Titans superstar nearly tied the mark with a desperation three as time expired but missed the shot.

Other than failing to break one of basketball’s most coveted scoring records, Davis also grabbed headlines with some post-game antics:

The Titans and the Youngstown State Penguins were performing their customary handshake when things got out of control. Davis and Cohill shoved each other before cooler heads prevailed.

Davis was later escorted by teammates and security out of the Penguins' gym. They were pelted by fans on the way out.

Antoine Davis had 26 field goal attempts, so it wasn't for lack of trying that "Pistol" Pete Maravich's record still stands. The Penguins, knowing he was at the doorstep of history, did not give him any leeway.

The two teams were playing in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League, so it was already expected to be tight and competitive. There was also the added incentive for Davis to grab a coveted record. Youngstown didn't want to be the team on the wrong end of basketball history.

The Titans and Penguins engaged in a heated battle down the stretch. Detroit's loss and Davis' failure to break the record were bound to add spice to the already contentious game.

The stars were perfectly aligned for Antoine Davis to surpass the record of one of basketball's most unstoppable scorers. He had to score buckets for a team that badly needed his vaunted scoring exploits.

However, Davis finished his collegiate year just short of Pete Maravich's most renowned record.

"Pistol" Pete Maravich played 83 games and piled up 3,667 points. The LSU legend averaged a whooping 44.2 PPG without hitting a single shot from behind the arc. Maravich played when the long-range shot wasn't even introduced.

Davis, on the other hand, benefited from the 3-pointer. Heading into tonight's matchup, he had already made 584 trifectas. Davis added four more tonight but still fell just a little short.

Had the Titans guard made his last shot from deep, he would have finished his career tied with Maravich.

Davis averaged 25.5 points while hitting 41.9% of his 3-point shots.
