The Golden State Warriors have acquired prolific shooter Buddy Hield in a sign-and-trade deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Warriors, who lost shooting wing Klay Thompson, will pair Steph Curry with Hield, who, like Curry, is among the leaders in 3-pointers made over the last five seasons.

The deal secures Buddy Hield for the Warriors on a multi-year contract worth a total of $21 million. The agreement includes $18 million guaranteed over the first two years, with a $3 million partial guarantee in the third year. Hield will hold a player option for a non-guaranteed fourth year.

The Warriors’ acquisition of Hield came on the heels of the departure of Thompson, one half of the “Splash Brothers,” who left the Warriors to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million contract.

Buddy Hield, 31, made the most threes over the past five seasons with 1,322 3-pointers, while Curry is second with 1,264.

To get Hield, the Warriors traded a 2031 second-round pick, which they obtained from Thompson's sign-and-trade deal with the Mavericks.

Hield, who was traded from the Indiana Pacers to the 76ers in February, averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game in a career-high 84 games during the 2023-24 NBA season.

Acquiring Hield is the Warriors’ latest move as they aim to improve from their 46-36 finish last season, which ended with a defeat in the NBA Play-in Tournament.

The team also added guard De'Anthony Melton on a one-year, $12.8 million contract and forward Kyle Anderson on a three-year, $27 million sign-and-trade deal.

Fans give new Steph Curry-Buddy Hield tandem a fitting nickname

Shortly after news broke that the Warriors are pairing Steph Curry with Buddy Hield, fans bestowed a new nickname upon their tandem.

The “Splash Brothers” nickname was given to Curry and Thompson's duo due to their ability to "splash" the net with 3-point shots.

Now that Thompson is gone and Curry is paired with Hield, fans have given them a new nickname: “Splash Buddies.” The nickname is fitting given Hield's first name, "Buddy," and his prolific shooting ability. He is a career 40.0% shooter in eight NBA seasons.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Hield picked the Warriors over other teams such as the LA Lakers and the Detroit Pistons.

"After losing Thompson, the Warriors were in desperate search for a high-volume shooter who could open up the floor a bit more in some of their lineup combinations. That’s Hield’s specialty," Charania said.

Hield previously played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers and most recently, the Philadelphia 76ers.
