What is the current value of San Antonio Spurs? Here are all the details

2014 NBA Finals - Game Five
The San Antonio Spurs are five-time NBA champions.

The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most successful teams in NBA history. They have won five championships since joining the league in 1976. That's the fifth most by a franchise behind the Boston Celtics, LA Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls.

The Spurs have been a model franchise since the Holt Family took over as owners in 1993. Gregg Popovich became the coach in 1996, helping the team win titles in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014.

Popovich built around legendary players such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard. However, the Spurs' success was halted in 2020 when they missed the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.

The team is now in rebuilding mode, with young players such as Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Tre Jones and Jeremy Sochan. They also have a shot at drafting Victor Wembanyama next year if they own one of the worst records in the league.

According to Forbes, the San Antonio Spurs are currently worth $2 billion. The franchise has been owned by the Holt Family since 1993, but new partners bought stakes last year. Sixth Street Partners, a global investment firm, has acquired a 20% stake, while Michael Dell of Dell Techonologies acquired 10%.

The Spurs' valuation has increased over the years since 2014. They were valued at $660 million that year, but increased to $1 billion a year later. After just seven years, the value of the franchise has doubled.

It could have been higher if the Spurs were a winning team. Their local TV ratings have declined for a fourth straight year. If they add Victor Wembanyama next year, the team's value could increase by $500 million. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported last month a team president believes that Wembanyama will be worth half-a-billion to an NBA franchise.

After selling some of their stake last year, the San Antonio Spurs appear not to be for sale anytime soon. However, there were rumors of a potential move to Austin, Texas, earlier this year. The team reportedly requested to play two home games at the Moody Center in Austin, as reported by ESPN.

Bexar County, who owns the AT&T Stadium where the Spurs play their home games, expressed their concern about the team's motives. However, a team official told the county commissioner's office that the Spurs were just trying to expand their brand.

Spurs majority owner Peter J. Holt had to release a statement and assured the people of San Antonio that the team wouldn't be moving out.

"My family became involved in the Spurs in the '90s because there was a real threat the team would be moved," Holt said. "We would not let that happen then and we will not let that happen now. There are no Spurs without the city and the people of San Antonio."
