Over the past decade, Joel Embiid has emerged as a superstar for the Philadelphia 76ers. After the team was done making numerous additions this offseason, it decided to take care of its top player as well.
Just weeks before training camp gets underway, the Sixers and Embiid agreed to terms on a new deal. The former MVP inked a three-year max extension worth $193 million.

With this extension, Embiid is now signed through the next five years. His old deal runs through this upcoming season and next, earning $51.4 and $55.2 million, respectively. Since he signed a new extension, his player option for the 2026-27 campaign is automatically declined.

Joel Embiid's salary will see a sizable increase in 2027 and beyond when the new contract kicks in. In the first year of the deal, the All-Star center is set to make $59.5 million. Embiid's salary then goes up $64.3 million in 2028, followed by a $69.1 million player option for 2029.
Before getting injured against the Golden State Warriors last year, Embiid looked well on his way to winning a second MVP. However, things got derailed when he was forced to sit on the sidelines for months. Embiid only ended up playing 39 games in the regular season, posting averages of 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
Joel Embiid set to become top-five earner in NBA history
When Joel Embiid first got drafted, many wondered if he would ever see an NBA court. Years later, he's managed to defy the odds and become one of the highest-paid players in NBA history.
As ESPN's Bobby Marks mentioned, Embiid's new deal bumps his career earnings up to $515. This is the fourth-most ever, trailing all-time talents Steph Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant.
With Joel Embiid locked up long-term, now is the time to deliver results. After failed projects with Ben Simmons and James Harden, the front office completely revamped the roster around the superstar center.
Daryl Morey and the Sixers cleared a sizable amount of cap space this summer and quickly made the most of the opportunity. Following months of ongoing rumors, the team was able to sign Paul George in free agency. Between Embiid, PG and Tyrese Maxey, the Sixers have a big three who can lead them on a deep playoff run.
The key for Embiid this season will be to stay healthy. Philly has the talent to contend, but it doesn't mean anything if he isn't 100%. Luckily for the Sixers, bringing in Andre Drummond should help put less wear and tear on Embiid during the regular season.
Embiid's journey in the NBA continues to be one of a kind. Only time will tell if he'll get the storybook ending of hoisting up the trophy that has so far eluded him.
