The LA Lakers might have to prepare for an even longer absence from Jarred Vanderbilt. The forward had missed significant time last season due to a foot injury, which he interestingly decided not to get surgery for, according to Mike Bresnahan of the 'LakeShow' podcast.

Bresnahan speculates that Vanderbilt might not be ready for the team's training camp, which will open for all 30 teams on Oct. 1. Vanderbilt also seems to be at risk of missing the preseason games which will begin on Oct. 4.

Jarred Vanderbilt's possible absence deals a blow to the Lakers depth at the frontcourt. Without him, the team will miss out on having a capable defensive-minded backup for when Anthony Davis rotates out for a quick breather on the bench.

On the other hand, Gabe Vincent, who only appeared in 11 games last season, is ready to go for the training camp, according to Bresnahan. Once he is fully healthy, Vincent will be able to provide floor-spacing from off the bench.

What happened to Jarred Vanderbilt?

Jarred Vanderbilt's 2023-24 season was plagued with injuries. He missed the first 20 games of the season due to a heel injury. He eventually returned in December and slowly began to find his rhythm.

His numbers were climbing as he settled into his role for the Lakers. However, during the team's Feb. 1 contest against the Boston Celtics, he would exit midgame due to foot soreness.

Vanderbilt would not return to the game and would miss the rest of the season after only 29 games. He averaged 5.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals while seeing an average of 20 minutes of action per game.

When will Jarred Vanderbilt return?

There is currently no timetable for when Vanderbilt will become available again. The update given by Mike Bresnahan in the LakeShow podcast appears to be speculation, but it suggests that the ailing big man is hoping rehab will do the trick and that he'll be able to come back without undergoing surgery.

Vanderbilt's presence will be essential for the Lakers as they hope to become serious contenders in the West. The team remained relatively quiet during the free agency period and did not aggressively pursue any trades. However, the front office might regret this if Vanderbilt ends up missing a lot of time similar to last season.

Fans might need to wait until the start of training camp before hearing an update regarding Vanderbilt's availability.
