The Dallas Mavericks announced on Tuesday that Kyrie Irving underwent surgery on his left hand after suffering an injury during training. Irving is coming off his first full season with the Mavericks and helped the franchise reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011.

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Irving suffered a broken left hand in training earlier this month. The injury was severe enough to require surgery and the Mavericks are prepared to give more updates when it becomes available.

Irving doesn't have a lot on his plate this offseason, considering he was not selected by Team USA to take part in the 2024 Paris Olympics. He's scheduled to tour and promote his shoes for Anta this summer although the surgery could derail those plans.

It's just July so Irving and the Mavericks are lucky since a broken hand usually heals in a month or two. It could take more to fully recover and the one-time NBA champ has ample time to get to where he wants to be before training camp starts in September.

Kyrie Irving has never played a full 82-game season in his career and is known for being a little bit injury-prone. Irving missed 24 games last season due to different injuries. He started the season with a foot issue that caused him to miss two games in Week 1.

The same foot issue lingered in November and December before suffering a heel contusion, which led to 12 missed games from Dec. 11 to 30. He resumed play in January, but a finger injury in his right hand led to six missed games from Jan. 24 to Feb. 3.

The Dallas Mavericks rested him in the final two games of the season and was completely rejuvenated in the playoffs. Irving helped the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals for the first time since winning the title in 2011. However, the Boston Celtics were just too much and beat the Mavs in five games.

Dallas Mavericks added Klay Thompson this offseason

One of the reasons why the Dallas Mavericks were dominated by the Boston Celtics was their lack of consistent 3-point shooting. The Mavs had a lot of open 3s in the NBA Finals, but most of their players missed them, which could have won them a game or two more.

With Klay Thompson available in free agency, Kyrie Irving was one of the players who convinced him to join the Mavericks. Thompson is one of the greatest shooters in NBA history and is looking for a fresh start after a tumultuous final year with the Golden State Warriors.
