Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks began their quest to get back to the NBA Finals on Monday. Just two days into training camp, some troubling news surfaced regarding the All-Star guard.

On Wednesday afternoon, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported an injury update on Doncic. The Mavericks star suffered a calf contusion in his left leg that will leave him sidelined for a while. Doncic will be re-evaluated by the team's medical staff in one week.

This is a tough blow for the Mavericks, as Luka Doncic is the focal point of everything they do on the offensive end. Having him on the floor in training camp is essential, especially considering all the new pieces they brought in this offseason.

With him set to be re-evaluated in a week, it seems like this could end up being just a minor injury setback for Doncic. No matter the severity of the injury, it is not the best way to open the 2024-25 campaign.

Dallas Mavericks aren't worried about Luka Doncic missing significant time

Not long after the report surfaced regarding Luka Doncic's injury, more developments emerged about a possible timeline. ESPN's Tim MacMahon cited that the Mavericks believe Doncic will be ready come their regular season opener.

Next week, the Mavericks will kick off their four-game preseason schedule with a matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies. Their final game before the real action begins is on October 17th against the Milwaukee Bucks.

As far as the regular season goes, the Mavericks kick off the year on their home floor in a Texas matchup. They are slated to host reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.

Seeing that the regular season is still three weeks away, Luka Doncic has plenty of time to recover from this calf injury. The key thing for the Mavs will be not overexerting their star guard this early in the year.

At 25-years-old, Doncic is getting ready to enter the prime of his career. He continues to cement himself as one of the game's top superstars, increasing his production with each passing season. Last year, Doncic led the league in scoring at 33.9 points per game while also averaging 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists.

With Doncic now expected to miss the rest of training camp, Jason Kidd will have to rely on his other two stars to lead the charge for the rest of the group. Kyrie Irving will look to continue his successful run in Dallas, while Klay Thompson is hoping to silence his critics in this new chapter of his career.
