Looking at Jamal Murray's ethnicity

Many have wondered about Jamal Murray's ethnicity as he spearheads the Denver Nuggets alongside Nikola Jokic.

The Nuggets currently sit with a 2-0 lead over the LA Lakers in the Western Conference finals. With a big Game 3 on tap for Saturday night, the Lakers find themselves in a must-win position, while Murray and the Nuggets look to take a huge lead.

When looking at Murray's family tree, we see that his mother, Sylvia, and his father, Roger, were both born in Jamaica before moving to Canada at age nine.

Given that Murray was born in Canada, his ethnicity is Canadian-Jamaican.

According to Murray's father, Roger, he began teaching his son the importance of 'mind over matter' from a young age. As he explained in an interview with the Denver post back in 2017:

“In the early days, we used to always work on his form with free throws and jump shots. So he’d be at the free-throw line and would sometimes get frustrated because he wouldn’t make a shot. I told him he had to make 30 in a row. So he’s 7 years old and he has to make 30 in a row.
"There’s some frustration and some pressure. ... For me it was proving to him that he could do it, that it was mind over matter.”

Fans wondering 'What is Jamal Murray's ethnicity?' have also wondered about his relationship with his father

Those wondering about Jamal Murray's relationship with his father will be pleasantly surprised.

Although he seems to have a great relationship with both parents, it's specifically his father who helps him as a coach, trainer, father, and friend. Given that, many have wondered whether or not it was Murray's father who pushed him into basketball.

As it turns out, that couldn't be further from the truth. Heading into Murray's sophomore year, his father explained that regardless of what his son wanted to do, he would help him be the best.

“I saw him as almost superhuman,” Roger said. “I watched how he approaches things mentally, how committed he was to things he wanted to do. He would never give up and never put any blocks in the way to stop him from whatever he was trying to do.
"Whatever my boy wants to do. I’m going to help him be the very best at it. ... It happened to be basketball that he loved,”

As one of the best Canadian players in the NBA, and the only Jamaican-Canadian, Jamal Murray's dominance has given many fans something to be excited about. With Game 3 set to tip off on Saturday, only time will tell whether Murray and the Nuggets are able to move one step closer to the finals.
