As Trey Murphy III gears up to participate in Saturday night's Slam Dunk Contest in Salt Lake City, Utah, his recent surge in play has drawn plenty of attention. Prior to the All-Star break, Murphy popped off for an astounding season-high of 30 points in a 136-104 win over the Sacramento Kings.

With the Kings sitting in third place in the West, Murphy's play earned him plenty of praise and attention going into his Slam Dunk Contest performance this weekend. Given his recent impressive play, fans are wondering how long the New Orleans Pelicans will have him under contract.

Murphy is currently on his rookie contract after being drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies. The contract will see him earn $14.7M over four years, with a base salary of $3.05M in his rookie year. In addition, he earns $3.2M this season, and won't become a free agent until 2025.

Of course, with his recent surge in play, the Pelicans will likely extend him. Prior to going off for 30 points against the Kings, he had been in a cold slump from beyond the arc. After draining six threes, he spoke to media members about his play, saying:

“Just got to keep shooting, no matter if you hitting or not. Eventually, your percentage is gong to get to where it’s supposed to be. So, I’m just glad my teammates found me and I was able knock down shots.”

After averaging 5.4 points per game over the 13.9 minutes played throughout his rookie season, Murphy has been eager to kick it into high gear this year. Putting aside talk of a potential sophomore slump, he has averaged 12.9 points per game this season over the 29.2 minutes played.

In addition to averaging 48.1% from the field, he's managed to shoot 39.7% from beyond the arc. After Trey Murphy III's big 30-point performance last week, Pelicans head coach Willie Green spoke to media members about his growth, saying:

"Trey has been huge the last couple nights for us, but even all season he's consistent, he come into practice, he puts his work in and we're all seeing it on display night in and night out so sky's the limit for Trey. He's going to continue to get better."

"His game will continue to open up but tonight was a really great effort on his part. Good to see him knock down a few shots."

In addition to getting an invite to the Rising Stars Challenge, he is getting ready to participate in the slam dunk contest Saturday night. What makes the feat even more remarkable is the fact that he didn't dunk a basketball until his senior year of high school.

As he revealed this week, it has been a crazy journey since then until now. With time winding down before he takes center court, he's been eager to show fans the dunks he has in his bag.
