During Brittney Griner's time at Baylor, the basketball standout met Cherelle Watson, the woman she went on to marry. Although the couple are happily married now, Griner was married once before and things didn't go very well. While she referenced her girlfriend finishing up school at Baylor in an interview shortly after being drafted, things didn't work out.

The following year in 2014, Griner began dating fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson, who played in the WNBA for the Tulsa Shock from 2012-2019. Less than a year after their engagement, the pair were involved in an altercation at their home in Phoenix that saw both women arrested on assault charges.

After deciding to marry anyway and sitting through their respective suspensions from the WNBA, it was revealed that Johnson was pregnant with twins. The very next day, Griner filled for an annulment of the marriage, which was denied. It would take another year for the pair's divorce to be final, which Griner calls a major mistake.

"Prior to us getting married I know I shouldn't have went through with it, and I talked to Gloria about it but sometimes you feel pressured into things and I went along with it and I know I shouldn't have. And it was a huge mistake, and I just knew it was a mistake.

"With everything going on and counseling, and classes, it just wasn't the right way to start off a marriage. It wasn't the right way to start off in unity like that and wanted to take time to get myself right and it shouldn't have done it. And we both agreed to get a divorce annulment."

You can see the interview in the video above, with Griner's statements about her first marriage being a mistake around the 2-minute mark.

Brittney Griner's current wife Cherelle

Fortunately for Griner, after her marriage to Johnson was annulled, she reconnected with Cherelle, who she became engaged to back in 2018. After a wedding the following year, the pair have seemed to be head over heels for one another ever since.

While Brittney Griner was wrongfully detained in Russia, it was her wife Cherelle who was credited with doing everything she possibly could to bring her wife home. After months of inaction, it was Cherelle who put the pressure on U.S. President Joe Biden and his administration to bring her home.

It took ten long months for Brittney Griner to return home to her wife. When she finally returned to U.S. soil, the pair were happily reunited. As Cherelle stated at the time, Griner's return meant that her family was whole once more.

"Yesterday my heart was made whole thanks to the collective efforts of MANY! I’m humbled by their hearts. To care for another, a stranger to some, a friend to some -- is humanity in its purest form!"
