It's safe to say former WNBA champion Brittney Griner has lived her life the way she wants to ever since she became a professional basketball player. That didn't change even after she was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in 2013.

That includes her masculine dressing sense, which she has always stuck with since becoming a basketball sensation. Griner isn't a fan of makeup, either. Griner revealed in 2013 that she had declined to attend the WNBA's rookie orientation on makeup and how to dress.

"I don't need that s**t," said Griner.

Brittney Griner's comments came while she was at the makeup desk before appearing at the ESPYs in 2013. Griner wasn't a fan of getting the makeup done as her artist put up the slightest smudge of foundation and undereye concealer.

Brittney Griner's personality has always leaned towards her being masculine. From avoiding makeup to dressing up like a man, Griner has boldly flaunted her choices. It garnered plenty of "man jokes" directed at her since her high school days, but she remained unfazed by it.

In 2013, she became the first woman to be signed by Nike to a deal to model their menswear clothing. Griner fully embraced that and set an example for women like her, hiding in the shadows about their gender, interests and choices that they wish to own but can't due to trolls.

Griner's always had a strong mentality. Even after seeing the ridiculous trolls aimed at her online and everywhere else, she hasn't refused to stick to her choices. She once told ESPN that it only motivates her to put her real personality out there even more:

"Reading what people say makes me want to be me even more."

Griner's openness and boldness have been key in helping her garner the respect and love of her peers from the basketball world. The outpouring of support she got from them during her time in Russia as a prisoner is a testament to that.
