When Brittney Griner revealed Mark Cuban would consider playing her in men’s league: “I would actually go try to play with boys”

Standing at six-foot-nine, Brittney Griner quickly established herself as a dominant force in the WNBA. Since the league formed in 1996, there have been a total of 34 dunks performed by eight different women. Griner accounts for 24 of those 34 converted attempts.

In her nine-year career, Brittney Griner has been named to seven All-Star teams and led her Phoenix Mercury to a championship back in 2014. The former first-overall pick was so confident in her talents that at one point she entertained the idea of going against NBA athletes.

While appearing on "Conan" one night, Brittney Griner was asked if she'd ever try to test her luck against male professional basketball players. She responded by saying she's open to the idea, and so is Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

"Mark Cuban actually said he would consider it, and I actually would try out. I would actually try and go play out with the boys."

She continued:

"Why not? I'd entertain it, I'd definitely go out there, try and get a couple blocks."

In her WNBA tenure, Griner has career averages of 17.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks.

Brittney Griner claimed she could beat NBA center in a game of one-on-one

This interview was not the first time Brittney Griner spoke on the idea of going against male pro players. While training for the Olympics back in 2016, she said in an interview that she could beat DeMarcus Cousins in a game of one-on-one.

Cousins might be out of the league now, but he was once one of the top big men in the NBA. The former No. 5 pick was an All-Star in 2016 after averaging 26.9 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists for the Sacramento Kings.

After hearing these comments, Cousins tried to be as polite as possible in his response to Griner. He applauded her for her confidence, but made it clear that things would not go down the way she thought:

"I'm glad she's that confident in her ability, but she's also a little delusional."

As an athlete, Griner is going to accept any type of challenge. That type of competitive fire fueled her into becoming one of the best in her league. However, going toe-to-toe with a player like Boogie Cousins is no small task.

Part of why Cousins was so dominant was because he was as mean and physical as they come. Griner brings a similar type of size and physicality, but might have fallen short against the All-Star center.
