When Brittney Griner spoke on her appearance getting her labeled as violent: “Like I started the brawl… Royal Rumble style!”

Back in August 2019, Brittney Griner found herself in a heated altercation on the basketball court. During a matchup against the Dallas Wings, tensions reached a fever pitch.

Things started when Brittney Griner set up a hard screen. Players got into it, but the situation was quickly dissolved. The same cannot be said for later in the game.

While boxing out for a rebound, Brittney Griner had her arm pulled on. She then let her emotions get the best of her and went after her opponent. A big brawl ensued that led to multiple players getting suspended.

Not long after the altercation, Griner was interviewed to talk about what happened. It was there that she opened up on why she felt her name was all over the headlines:

"With this whole ordeal and I guess my demeanor and how big I am honestly that's what I'm taking from it.

"It's Brittney Griner and others get suspended like I started the whole brawl or something. Like I just went out there Royal Rumble style."

Brittney Griner deserved to have her name in headlines

Brittney Griner might not like it, but she deserved to be a major name in the headlines for this incident. It might not be totally her fault, but she is one of the main reasons why it escalated to such a degree.

Some of it does have to do with who she is. For starters, she is a former No. 1 pick and multi-time All-Star. On top of that, there aren't many 6-foot-9 players in the WNBA. Because of these factors, she is the go-to name to put in the headlines.

Because of how physical her style of play is, Griner can be seen as an instigator on the court. Her size advantage also makes her a target for opponents looking to make a statement.

Looking back on what happened, it's hard not to say Griner was the main person involved. She was part of the initial altercation under the rim and couldn't control herself. Griner chased her opponent all the way to the other side of the court before being restrained. It also needs to be pointed out that she threw the first punch.

Griner has been a target over the years because of her size, but it was warranted in this instance. Her emotions got the best of her and resulted in a multi-game suspension. As the main person involved, she can't be mad that it was her name at the top of all the stories.
