France vs Japan key matchups to focus on
The key matchup to focus on in this game will be in the frontcourt. What makes the French squad so tough to guard is that they deploy a pair of seven-footers in their lineup. If Japan wants any shot at pulling off an upset, they'll need to try and slow down Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert.
This will be a tough task for Japan, as they have limited size in their lineup. At the center position, they have Josh Hawkinson (6-foot-10) and Hugh Watanabe (6-foot-9). Despite both giving up a couple of inches to him, these two will likely be tasked with defending the Minnesota Timberwolves center.
As for Wembanyama, Japan will have to rely on some of their NBA talent to guard him. Among those likely to match up with reigning Rookie of the Year are LA Lakers forward Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe.
Wembanyama put together a strong performance for France in his Olympic debut. In the win over Brazil, he finished with 19 points, two assists, four steals and three blocks. As for Gobert, he recorded seven points and three rebounds.
For the French, Hachimura and Watanabe will be the two players they'll have to key in on. They led the charge offensively for Japan in their loss to Germany, notching 20 and 16 points respectively.
