Which college did Davion Mitchell attend and how did he fare there? All you need to know

Baylor v Gonzaga
Davion Mitchell at the Baylor vs. Gonzaga game.

Davion Mitchell is more than a defensive specialist for the Sacramento Kings. Before making a name for himself as a lockdown defender, Mitchell had to learn his tricks in college.

Mitchell started off his college career at Auburn where he was the backup point guard. In his freshman year, he only averaged 3.7 points and 1.9 assists. He didn't play during his sophomore season as he decided to transfer to Baylor and had to sit out due to NCAA rules.

Despite his size, Mitchell was able to make a name for himself as an elite defender for the Bears. In his first year playing for Baylor, the 6-foot guard announced his presence as a top collegiate guard. The defensive guard averaged 9.9 points, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals, earning him All-Defensive and All-Newcomer Team honors. (via bustingbrackets.com)

During his last college season, Mitchell improved tremendously, increasing his draft stock. He averaged 14.0 points, 5.5 assists and 1.9 steals in his last year at Baylor, which was good enough for them to win the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, beating Gonzaga.

For his final college season, he was named Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award, NABC Defensive Player of the Year and the Lefty Driesell Award. (via kcentv.com)

Shooting the ball hasn't been the best tool of his NBA career. In his first year, Mitchell shot 41.8% from the field and 31.6% from the 3-point line. Still, he showed grit and determination for Sacramento, making him a solid fan-favorite in the entire association.

He's currently playing his sophomore season, but hasn't really been a reliable source of offense for the team. Prior to their matchup against the Phoenix Suns on Monday, Mitchell was averaging 6.6 points, 2.1 assists and 0.4 steals. One detail that has held him back this year is his reduced playing time.

Mitchell has played only 18.7 minutes this season, which is probably why his numbers have gone down. His efficiency on the floor hasn't improved that much since his rookie year. Although he's shooting better from the field with 47.1%, Mitchell's reliability from the 3 isn't that impressive.

The former ninth overall pick has a huge ceiling. His defensive abilities have helped him become a sought-after talent in the league. Mitchell may not be a great scorer, but his defense has helped the Kings win a few games.
