Haley and Hanna Cavinder are twin sisters who play for the University of Miami. After spending a majority of their college years at Fresno State, they are now involved in a scandal after transferring this season.
The debate over whether college athletes should be paid went on for years, and the NCAA recently allowed players to start signing NIL deals. That being said, the Cavinder twins are connected to the first infraction.
Early Friday afternoon, reports emerged that the University of Miami's women's basketball team is getting a year of probation and other penalties. The case is centered around the university being involved in a meeting between the twins and a wealthy alumni.

John Ruiz is a Miami alumni who went on to found the company LifeWallet. Since college athletes have been able to sign NIL deals, he's paid countless athletes to promote his company. That being said, the university is being punished for connecting him with Hanna and Haley leading up to their transfer.
"Ruiz has signed more than 100 Hurricanes athletes to NIL deals to promote his company LifeWallet, some of them reportedly worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. His conversations and deals with athletes who have transferred to Miami in a number of sports have come under NCAA scrutiny in the past year.
"Ruiz, who was not sanctioned or disassociated from the school as a result of this case, told ESPN that the NCAA has no right to stop him from contacting any parties with whom he wants to sign a contract for his business."
What other punishments were handed out in the Cavinder twins scandal?
According to a report from ESPN, the university is not the only party being punished for this NIL infraction. Miami head coach Katie Meier was given a three-game suspension earlier this year for being involved in the event.
During the investigation, the NCAA cited that Meier had spoken with Ruiz and helped set up a meeting between him and the Cavinder twins. Meier has been Miami's women's coach since 2005 and has a career record of 341-222.
As of now, nothing has been mentioned in regards to the twins themselves. So far this season, Hanna is averaging 3.7 points and 1.5 rebounds while Haley is posting 12.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists.
