Jordan Hawkins battles illness to help UConn record dominant win over Miami in Final Four
Jordan Hawkins displayed his gritty side after gutting it out for UConn in their final four game against Miami at the NCAA tournament. Hawkins' presence in the contest was in doubt after he missed Friday's practice and wasn't fully available for the team's shootaround on Saturday.
It was a game-time decision for him. However, Hawkins led the team out of the tunnel and started the game. He knocked down two of his three triples at the start to give UConn a 9-0 advantage after the tip-off. Hawkins finished with 13 points in 25 minutes, despite struggling with his health.
The sophomore guard revealed that he had been ill due to food poisoning. Hawkins believed it was because he had eaten Calimari at an up-scale Houston-area steakhouse.
However, Jordan Hawkins showed up and put up a respectable performance. The Huskies secured a 72-59 blowout win over No. 5 Miami. UConn entered the final four as the best-seeded team at No. 4 and played like one. Hawkins didn't have the impact he had after playing through illness, but his mere presence provided a solid boost for his team. Here's what Hawkins said about his illness:
“I absolutely knew I was going to play. I didn’t care how I was feeling. Put me on a stretcher, it didn’t matter.”
“Final Four game day, I wasn’t feeling the best,” he said in the locker room. “But you just have that mentality that you’ve got to go out and win a game for a national championship.”
The Huskies have outplayed all their opponents up to this mark and won comprehensively. Hawkins has played a significant role in that, especially in the Elite 8 and Sweet 16 rounds, where he bagged consecutive 20-point games.
