Who is Lakers' new head coach JJ Redick? Closer look at former NBA star's career & more

NBA: Finals-Dallas Mavericks at Boston Celtics
Who is the LA Lakers newest head coach?

The long search for the next LA Lakers coach is over as JJ Redick has reportedly been hired to fill the position. Redick was initially the frontrunner to replace Darvin Ham but UConn coach Dan Hurley briefly took over as the top candidate.

After Hurley opted to remain with UConn, Redick once again took over as the lead candidate. ESPN and Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Thursday that the Lakers and Redick have agreed on a four-year deal.

Redick has never coached in the NBA or college. However, he was a 15-year NBA journeyman.

Redick was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the 11th pick in 2006 after a highly decorated collegiate career at Duke.

Throughout his NBA career, Redick made a name for himself as a reliable 3-point shooter. He is a career 41.5% shooter from beyond the arc, making a career-best 47.5% shooting from downtown during the 2015-16 season.

Redick played seven years with the Orlando Magic to start his career (2006-13). Midway through the 2013 season, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. In the succeeding offseason, Redick moved to LA to play with the LA Clippers, becoming a part of the Lob City era.

In 2017, Redick left the Clippers for the Philadelphia 76ers, where he had arguably the two best season of his career. In his first year with the Sixers, Redick averaged a career-best 17.1 points per game while shooting 42.0% from downtown. He followed with 18.1 ppg in the 2018-19 season after re-signing with the Sixers.

Despite enjoying plenty of team success with the Clippers and the Sixers, Redick never set foot in the NBA Finals. He also never won any significant accolades or earned any All-Star nods.

He played the last three years of his career with the New Orleans Pelicans. Since retiring from playing, Redick has spent time as an ESPN analyst and a host of "The Old Man & the Three" and "Mind the Game" podcasts.

JJ Redick is the Lakers' fifth head coach since the 2014-15 season

The head coaching position with the LA Lakers seems to be one with little job security. As a franchise that demands and expects a championship every season, having little patience with its coach can be expected.

In the 10 seasons before Redick's hiring, the position has been held by Byron Scott (2014-16), Luke Walton (2016-19), Frank Vogel (2019-21) and Darvin Ham (2022-23).

Scott and Walton could not take the Lakers into the postseason, but Vogel led the team to a championship in his first year. However, he was terminated after the 2021-22 season after the team failed to reach the postseason. Darvin Ham reached the Western Conference finals in his first year and was eliminated in the first round in the previous playoffs, both to the Denver Nuggets.
