During the 2018 NCAA tournament, Sister Jean became an internet sensation. She is a chaplan at Loyola Chicago, and at 98 years old, sat courtside as the team made its first-ever appearance in March Madness.
The tournament is known for its Cinderella stories, and Loyola Chicago added to the magic. As an 11 seed, they managed to make it all the way to the Final Four. With each win, Sister Jean continued to gain more popularity.
They failed to make it to the championship game, but it's still an incredible run for a school that's never played on the big stage before. While she is loyal to her school, the "basketball nun" has given a different prediction for this year's tournament.
During a recent appearance on "Good Morning America," Dolores Schmidt was asked who she thought was going to win it all this year. The 103-year-old responded by picking not her Loyola Chicago, but the University of Kentucky.
Kentucky is currently 20-9 on the year and riding a four-game win streak. The latest AP top 25 has them slated for 23rd. That being said, they now have luck on their side.
Does Sister Jean have a history of making good picks?
Seeing that she is now a main figure of the NCAA tournament, Kentucky should feel good that they were picked by Sister Jean to win it all.
As for her previous picks, she has a good track record. Before Loyola went on their run in 2018, she had said she was giving up losing for Lent. The team then went on to pull off multiple upsets and came within two wins of an NCAA Championship.
Loyola's first upset came when they knocked off Miami in round one. However, their biggest win of the tournament came in the round of 32. Pitted against the No. 3 Tennessee, they managed to barely skate by with a one-point victory.
Following their nail-bitter against Tennessee, Loyola Chicago once again won by one point in the Sweet 16 against seventh-seed Nevada. In the Elite 8, they won in convincing fashion over Kansas State.
Their historic run finally came to an end in the Final Four when they lost by double-digits to Michigan.
