The Atlanta Hawks picked French forward Zaccharie Risacher with the first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, marking their first time selecting first overall in 49 years. The Hawks chose Risacher over highly regarded prospect Alex Sarr, selected second overall by the Washington Wizards.

Hawks general manager Landry Fields earlier said Sarr had refused to participate in a pre-draft workout with the team.

Speaking on 92.9 The Game in Atlanta, Fields said:

“(Sarr) was scheduled to come to work out. We had it on the books, and then he declined to come work out.”

The selection of Zaccharie Risacher holds significant weight for the Hawks, especially since they do not control their own first-round picks until 2027 due to the trade for Dejounte Murray.

The 2024 NBA Draft is one of the biggest parts of Atlanta’s season, as they attempt to improve their position in the Eastern Conference. They finished with a 36-46 last season, while trying to avoid the luxury tax.

Alex Sarr was picked No. 2 overall by the Washington Wizards, where he unites with his fellow Frenchman Bilal Coulibaly.

Zaccharie Risacher became the second consecutive French prospect to be selected with the top pick in the draft. He follows Victor Wembanyama, who was chosen No. 1 by the San Antonio Spurs in last year's draft.

What Zaccharie Risacher brings to the Hawks

Zaccharie Risacher possesses a coveted 3-and-D skill set, standing at 6-foot-8 with considerable length. He demonstrated a 38.7% three-point shooting accuracy last season in the French LNB Élite league.

His addition bolsters the Hawks' shooting prowess and depth on the wing. This addresses a team need as they shot 36.4% collectively from beyond the arc last season.

He strengthens the team's wing rotation, crucial in a league valuing versatile wing players. Risacher also contributes as a ball handler, a potential asset should Atlanta consider trading any of their current backcourt players like Young or Murray. Additionally, his strengths include his passing ability and defensive capabilities with his long arms.

Risacher joins a wing rotation that includes Jalen Johnson, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Saddiq Bey, and potentially DeAndre Hunter, who reportedly is on the trading block.

To contribute effectively to the Hawks, Risacher needs to enhance his scoring around the rim in half-court situations. He will also be expected to improve his overall athleticism, as he currently lacks explosiveness off the dribble.

He must also validate his shooting consistency, having shot 48.2% from three-point range in his first 34 games but dropping to 29.8% in his final 31 games. His free throw shooting also needs improvement to solidify his scoring efficiency.
