LeBron James will not play for the LA Lakers in Friday's contest against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The four-time NBA MVP is listed as out as per the team's official injury report, citing a left foot soreness injury. Meanwhile, Lakers coach JJ Redick said James is also excused for personal reasons after he wasn't available during Wednesday's practice.
After playing the first 23 games without any breaks, James will miss two consecutive outings. The 39-year-old probably needs the break more than anyone, considering the workload he has carried since last season. James played a Lakers career-high 71 games last year and five playoff games, followed by 11 games with the Team USA this past summer for the Paris Olympics, including an exhibition.
His production dipped slightly this year after managing 23.0 points per game, his lowest since his rookie year, shooting on 50/36/76 splits. James is averaging 8.0 rebounds and 9.1 assists, but committing a career-high 4.1 turnovers per contest.

JJ Redick reacts to LeBron James' workload
JJ Redick maintained transparency about LeBron James' absence and workload situation this season. The Lakers rookie coach revealed there has been constant communication between James and the staff about his health and progression as he plays out his 22nd season in the NBA.
"He communicates to us ...," Redick said (h/t Sportskeeda's Mark Medina). "In game. he's asked for a sub couple of times because he's gassed. I think, for us, we have to be cognizant as we play more and more games, just the accumulative effect of playing a lot of minutes."
James didn't rest much initially, but that could change as the season progresses. The Lakers could also see multiple players return from injury, while a few potential trades to upgrade the roster could also ease the pressure on the 39-year-old star. James' impact hasn't been as relevant to the team's success this season as compared to previous years.
LeBron James' steady regression, especially on defense, has directly influenced the team's results.
