The LA Lakers won't have Rui Hachimura in their lineup on Saturday night against the Golden State Warriors. Hachimura has been a starter, but will miss his sixth game of the season. But why is the Japanese star not playing tonight versus Golden State?
According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, Hachimura has been downgraded to out because of soreness in his left calf. Earlier in the day, he was not initially on the Lakers' injury report but was then tagged as questionable.
Less than three hours before tip-off, the Lakers have listed Hachimura as out and will be unable to play. He'll be on the team's bench, with Gabe Vincent or Dorian Finney-Smith likely getting the nod to start. Vincent matches up with the Warriors' small ball, but Finney-Smith gives the team size and shooting.

Despite Rui Hachimura's absence, the LA Lakers will get some boost off the bench with the return of Jarred Vanderbilt. It has been almost a year since Vanderbilt last played a game after suffering a foot injury against the Boston Celtics in early February 2024.
Vanderbilt underwent double foot surgery in the offseason and was initially slated to return in December. However, he suffered a setback during his rehab when he suffered fluid buildup in his knee. He has since been cleared to return and is expected to play against the Golden State Warriors.
If Gabe Vincent or Dorian Finney-Smith won't start for the Lakers, Vanderbilt is another option for coach JJ Redick. The only problem with "Vando" is he'll likely be under a minutes restriction.
As for Hachimura, he has been relatively healthy this season and has only missed five games prior to tonight. He dealt with a couple illnesses in early November and late December, while also having minor issues with his ankle and leg.
LA Lakers unlikely to trade Rui Hachimura before deadline
One of the names linked to a potential trade before the Feb. 7 deadline is Rui Hachimura. However, LA Lakers insider Dan Woike reported that the franchise might not be open to dealing the Japanese star.
"I spoke to a Lakers source about this where I was talking about a trade that involves Rui Hachimura going out in the trade and they’re like, ‘I don’t know, Rui’s pretty good!’" Woike said, according to HoopsHype. "And that is the thing. I think that people have to realize is that like there is a reason why that is not a contract, that is not a player you might have to attach the same assets. ... That like he has real value, he has value to what they’re doing."
Hachimura has played in 37 games this season and is averaging 12.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists. He's shooting 48.7% from the field, 41.0% from beyond the arc and 77.5% from the free throw line.
