Kim Mulkey is one of the greatest head coaches in women's college basketball history. Mulkey is a Hall of Fame coach with three NCAA championships in charge of Baylor. She's looking to add her fourth title in just her second season in charge of LSU.
Mulkey led the Tigers to their first Final Four appearance since 2008. They defeated the Miami Hurricanes 54-42 in their Elite Eight game. They will face the winner of the Virginia Tech-Ohio State matchup.
In addition to their win over Miami, Mulkey went viral for her shiny gameday outfit. She's known for her flamboyant style on the sidelines throughout the years, but her outfit on Sunday was one for the books.
It's not as ridiculous as her feathery suit in the Sweet 16 last Friday, but it's still eye-catching. Fans on the internet went after Kim Mulkey, with some people pointing out her style, while others looked at her murky history of controversial comments about the LGBTIQA+ community.
Here are some of the comments on Mulkey's Elite Eight outfit:
Kim Mulkey's controversy history
Kim Mulkey might be one of the greatest coaches in women's college basketball history, but she's also a problematic figure. Mulkey once insisted that LGBTIQA+ players should remain in the closer while playing for her.
The Hall of Fame coach said this in an interview with Outsports co-founder Cyd Zeigler after getting asked if she had a gay player on her team.
"Don't ask me that," Mulkey said. "I don't ask that. I don't think it's anybody's business. Whoever you are. I don't care to know that."
In addition to homophobic comments, Mulkey also allegedly called ESPN to fire Kate Fagan. The former writer reported in 2013 how Mulkey urged former Baylor star Brittney Griner not to come out during his stay at the university.
Griner revealed in her 2014 autobiography, "In My Skin," that Mulkey avoided talking about her sexuality during her time at Baylor.
"Big Girl, I don't care what you are," Mulkey told Griner. "You can be Black, White, blue, purple, whatever. As long as you come here and do what you need to do and hoop, I don't care."
The coach also supported Baylor football players accused of sexual assault in 2017. Mulkey bashed the university's critics for how they handled the situation, as reported by SB Nation's Swish Appeal.
Mulkey was also an outspoken critic of COVID testing and mask mandates during the pandemic. When Griner was detained in Russia for drug charges, she failed to show support or even make a comment about her former player.
