The 2024 NBA Draft started Wednesday and the San Antonio Spurs selected Stephon Castle to play alongside Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs had two picks inside the top 10: the fourth and eighth picks. San Antonio used the eighth pick to select Rob Dillingham out of Kentucky, who was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Spurs fans were particularly hyped with Castle’s selection. The guard is coming off of a NCAA title win with the UConn Huskies. A fan compared the new San Antonio pairing to that of the OKC Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren. A fan wrote on X/Twitter:
“Common spurs W. Castle and Wemby will be the next Shai and Chet type of duo.”

The comparison was obviously because of the positions Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama play and their similar size to that of SGA and Holmgren.
A fan even made an indirect comparison to Stephen Curry and called Castle the best “Stephen C” in the league:
“Best Stephen c in the league.”
While that’s definitely a stretch, you never know what the future holds.
Fans in general were impressed with the pick and expressed their joy on X.
“Solid pick for the spurs. Dude will be a star in a few years,” a fan wrote.
“Incredible pick,” another wrote.
“Spurs looking scary again,” a fan wrote.
Fans anticipated this to be a great matchup, as Castle can be a pick-and-roll partner for Wemby and can set up easy lobs for the French big man.
“This is going to be so good for Wemby,” another fan wrote.
Stephon Castle spent just one season with Connecticut. He started 30 out of 34 games and averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He was also named the Big East Freshman of the Year and made the Big East All-Freshman team.
Victor Wembanyama reacted to French players going 1, 2 in the 2024 NBA Draft
The top two picks in the 2024 NBA Draft were Zaccharie Risacher (Atlanta Hawks) and Alex Sarr (Washington Wizards). Besides being obviously great prospects, they are also from France. This was the first time in NBA history that the top two picks were international players.
Seeing that Victor Wembanyama was the top pick in 2023, it has now been two years in a row that a Frenchman went No. 1 in the draft. Wemby, obviously, couldn’t help his happiness and tweeted:
"It’s France brother," Wemby’s translated caption read.
Victor Wembanyama also had a message for Stephon Castle, as the two got on a video call after the former UConn guard was selected fourth by the San Antonio Spurs. Wemby said:
"I'm so, so happy with what we did. I don't know how you feel, but I'm super excited to start working."
Things are looking up for the San Antonio Spurs after a few years in obscurity, and with coach Gregg Popovich still at the helm, great things can be expected from the team in the near future.
