After high school, Toppin attended the University of Dayton and played college basketball for the Dayton Flyers. In his sophomore season in 2018-2019, he averaged 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in 2020.

After two seasons in college, Toppin declared for the 2020 NBA Draft and was selected with the eighth overall pick by the New York Knicks. In his rookie season with the Knicks, Toppin played 62 games, averaging 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game.

In his second NBA season, he saw more playing time averaging 9.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

After three seasons in New York, Toppin was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 2023. Through the first 15 games of the 2023/24 season, he is averaging 12.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists.
