Obi Toppin is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Indiana Pacers. He was selected by the New York Knicks with the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Toppin attended Ossining High School in New York, where he led the team to championship victory for the first time in 10 years and earned all-state honors as a senior. He then played two seasons of college basketball for the University of Dayton from 2018 to 2020. With his impressive performances at Dayton, he was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year. In his sophomore season, Toppin had a breakout year, averaging 20 points, 7.5 rebounds and shooting 63% from the field. He won the major National Player of the Year awards and helped lead Dayton to a 29-2 record and No. 3 ranking in the final AP Top 25 poll.

After declaring for the NBA draft following his sophomore season, Toppin was selected by his hometown team, the New York Knicks. As an NBA rookie in the 2020-2021 season, he played limited minutes off the bench behind All-Star Julius Randle. He averaged 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in just 11 minutes per game during the regular season. Toppin showed flashes of promise when given extended playing time, like when he scored a career-high 20 points against the Indiana Pacers in May 2021.

In the next two seasons, Toppin increased the court time to 15+ minutes. In these seasons he averaged 9.0 points and 7.4 points respectively. Also in his second season with the Knicks, he was the winner of the 2022 NBA Dunk Slam Contest.

He was then traded to the Indiana Pacers in July 2023. He has now joined Jalen Smith, and Aaron Nesmith for the 2023-24 season. Still just 23 years old, Toppin has a high ceiling if he continues developing his game. With his work ethic and athletic gifts, the former college Player of the Year is poised for a breakout in his fourth year as he helps the Pacers to go deep in the season.
