Born on December 11, 2000, in Los Angeles, California, Onyeka Okongwu is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Atlanta Hawks. He was drafted by the Hawks with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Okongwu’s passion for basketball developed after watching his older brother play the sport, and he started his journey at the age of eight, at a club program called Edge Basketball.

In high school, Okongwu played on the same team as the famous “Ball brothers,” LaMelo and Lonzo in his freshman season. He also won California’s Mr. Basketball for two years consecutively, in 2018 and 2019.

As a five-star recruit coming out of high school, Okongwu played college basketball for the USC Trojans, where he had one of the best freshman seasons in program history. He started all 28 games, averaging a team-high 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds. He posted 11 double-doubles, and was named on the first team All-Pac-12 and to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.

Given his performances in recent seasons, Okongwu was rewarded with a four-year $62 million rookie extension in October 2023, which will be effective from the 2024/25 season.
