34-year-old basketball coach Paramdeep Singh is back in India after having undergone a week-long training workshop organized by the National Basketball Association (NBA) at Orlando, Florida, USA. Paramdepp, who is the only coach from India to have been selected for this workshop, was attending his second such event, after having been invited for one in Texas in 2011.

And after having learnt much, Paramdeep is now keen to spread all that he has learnt with the aim of bringing back the glory days of Indian basketball.

“My selection came as a surprise to me and it was an honour also as no Indian coach has ever been selected for this training workshop. Observers from the NBA were present at the Mumbai workshop, which was organised by the Indian chapter of NBA in 2011, when they spotted me and selected me for the prestigious workshop in US,” said Paramdeep Singh.

“After joining basketball coaching, I got the opportunity to work under chief coach of the Indian team, US-based Scott Flemming and I learned a lot from his style of working. Under his coaching, Indian basketball team had shown significant improvement and got five steps up by improving its position to 11th from 16th in Asia,” he added.

At present, Paramdeep is an assistant coach with the under-14, under-16 and under-18 teams for India. He also accompanied the senior team as a coach for the FIBA 3-on-3 championship in Doha. The men’s team lost in the quarterfinals there, but the women went on to win the tournament.

Outside of basketball, Paramdeep is an inspector with the BSF, but he remains clear on his dream of delivering Indian basketball to some of its past glory and he believes spotting young talent is key.

“We aim to spot young talent and train them for future by using techniques and methodologies being used in US and European countries. We are also getting renowned industrial houses as sponsors. With stuff available with us, we can hope that the future of the sport is bright,” said Paramdeep.
