Point Guard - A lost art

Those who actually love and follow the game know the importance of a point guard. A point guard is solely responsible for the way the play goes. That’s why he is so important for the team.

This is an art, where he has be unselfish and look for a chance where there is a possibility of a higher percentage of shot. A true point guard plays for the team. Some might disagree with the fact that Allen Iverson wasn’t a true point guard and to some extent he wasn’t as he also switched over to shooting guard from time to time, but he had a very good pass percentage and assists per game (he had a career APG of 6.2 while maintaining PPG to a whopping 26.7 during his whole career).

However, we have some veteran point gaurds such as Steve Nash and Tony Parker who still bring it every time they step onto the court. You can’t help yourself from getting awed by the passing and dribbling skills of Steve Nash, who perhaps is one of the Greatest point guards of his era. The latest addition to this list is that of one Rajon Rondo, who according to the experts could well be the next big thing in the NBA. His game IQ is simply amazing. Plus he is young and he could surely be one of the top five players in the NBA.

But lately, being a true point guard is a lost art. Today the likes of Westbrook and Rose play the role just for the name sake. I am not denying the fact that they are amazing talents, but the fact is when a point guard regularly takes more shots than your shooting guard, they simply aren’t point guards. If this continues with more and more youngsters going for the ‘Dunk & Shoot’, then there won’t be any beauty remaining in this beautiful game.
