
Rui Hachimura is a professional Japanese basketball power forward for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. The Washington Wizards selected him as the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. In his rookie season he had reportedly scored 649 points, grabbed 294 rebounds and had 87 assists per game. Hachimura stayed with the Wizards for three years before signing with the Lakers midseason for the 2022-23 NBA season. As of April 26, 2025, he had played 59 games with the Washington Wizards in the 2024-25 season, averaging 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. In 2023, Hachimura joined the Lakers. He also won the NBA Cup Champions with the Lakers in 2023.
Hachimura initially decided to go play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the US. He then realized that he would have to take a different approach than most players. He made his debut for Gonzaga in November 2016 but got very little playtime. Hachimura was considered to be one of the elite international players joining the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
