Russell Westbrook and the LA Lakers have been much discussed ahead of the NBA trade deadline on February 9. Going into the season, it was no secret that Westbrook was on the chopping block, largely through little fault of his own. Despite backing from head coach Jacque Vaughn, talk of the team dealing Westbrook continued to surface.
The initial presumption was that the Lakers would trade Westbrook to the Brooklyn Nets in a package for Kyrie Irving. The move would see Irving reunited with LeBron James in 20th year as the four-time champion looks for another title. The trade would also see Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook join forces again.
So far, a trade has yet to materialize. With Kyrie Irving already dealt to the Dallas Mavericks, many are wondering if the Lakers will be able to move Westbrook and his massive contract. LA is aware that they need at least one more move before the deadline if they wish to compete, and all eyes are on them.
According to NBA Central and ESPN, Westbrook (who is in the final year of his contract) is allegedly considering a buyout.

While he seems open to the idea, reports have indicated that he knows a buyout tag could hurt his stock going into free agency. Despite that, if he is bought out, the Miami Heat have allegedly emerged as potential suitors.
Considering that the Heat have had an underwhelming season so far by most accounts, the team needs to make some changes. With another NBA Finals appearance firmly out of arm's reach, Miami will look to shake things up sooner rather than later.
Possible moves for Russell Westbrook
If the LA Lakers were to move Russell Westbrook, they certainly have more options than just a buyout.
Reports recently indicated that the Utah Jazz, who got off to a hot start this season, would be interested in making a trade for the former MVP.
The Jazz are 10th in a stacked Western Conference. As the team continues to fight for a spot in the playoffs, a trade for Westbrook, who could help fuel their offense, is appealing. However, a package for Westbrook would indicate that the team would likely commit to signing him at the end of the season.
Of course, if the LA Lakers' buyout happens, many believe that it will be the Miami Heat who sign the former MVP.
Leading up to the deadline, it's no secret that Kyle Lowry has been one of the most talked about trade assets for the team. If they were to make a move, many believe that it would start by moving Lowry. Should they pursue Westbrook, Lowry would likely find himself traded for other assets to pair with Butler and Westbrook.
